چکیده

Precise estimates for the validity of the amplitude approximation for the Swift-Hohenberg equation are given, in a fully time dependent framework. It is shown that small solutions of order O() which are modulated like stationary solutions have an evolution which is well described in the amplitude approximation for a time of order O(?2). For the proofs, we use techniques for nonlinear semigroups and oscillatory integrals.-2

A ug 2 01 1 Localised states in an extended Swift – Hohenberg equation

Recent work on the behaviour of localised states in pattern forming partial differential equations has focused on the traditional model Swift-Hohenberg equation which, as a result of its simplicity, has additional structure — it is variational in time and conservative in space. In this paper we investigate an extended Swift-Hohenberg equation in which non-variational and non-conservative effect...

Instability and Stability of Rolls in the Swift{hohenberg Equation

We develop a method for the stability analysis of bifurcating spatially periodic patterns under general nonperiodic perturbations. In particular, it enables us to detect sideband instabilities. We treat in all detail the stability question of roll solutions in the two{dimensional Swift{Hohenberg equation and derive a condition on the amplitude and the wave number of the rolls which is necessary...

Small-amplitude grain boundaries of arbitrary angle in the Swift-Hohenberg equation

We study grain boundaries in the Swift-Hohenberg equation. Grain boundaries arise as stationary interfaces between roll solutions of different orientations. Our analysis shows that such stationary interfaces exist near onset of instability for arbitrary angle between the roll solutions. This extends prior work in [6] where the analysis was restricted to large angles, that is, weak bending near ...

Grain-boundary motion in layered phases.

We study the motion of a grain boundary that separates two sets of mutually perpendicular rolls in Rayleigh-Bénard convection above onset. The problem is treated either analytically from the corresponding amplitude equations, or numerically by solving the Swift-Hohenberg equation. We find that if the rolls are curved by a slow transversal modulation, a net translation of the boundary follows. W...
